He escapes at the last gasp

The team failed to take advantage of clear chances to close out the game and conceded in the last action.

Alavés 2-2 Girona: Too much punishment

Victory slips away at Mendizorrotza. Girona went from strength to strength in the match, and were in control of the game throughout the second half, generating clear chances to finish the game off. Míchel Sánchez's men were comfortable on the ball and deserved to take all three points, but just as in the first half they resisted a hesitant spell in which they relied on Gazzaniga, the Basques did the same with Owono in the second half and capitalised on a set-piece in stoppage time.

Eric Garcia strikes first

The Catalan centre-back opened the scoring early on. Rising higher than anyone else, he headed the ball well inside the far post with just four minutes played, and made the strategy count to score his fourth goal of the season. The joy was short-lived, and the home side levelled the score soon after through Jon Guridi. The striker finished off a transition with a shot inside the box, and opened up a stretch of the game in which the Basques threatened with quick, vertical attacks and required Gazzaniga to be at his best. The Girona side resisted and reversed the situation. Sávio had a one-on-one that Owono saved with his foot, and Dovbyk was beaten in the six-yard box when he was about to shoot.

Yangel Herrera's goal to give way to the best of Girona

On the stroke of half-time, Yangel Herrera scored a wonderful goal that allowed Girona to regain the lead and show their best side in the second half. It came from a very well worked move between Portu, Tsygankov and Dovbyk himself, who set up Yangel Herrera to shoot from the edge of the area. The shot, powerful and well placed, cleared the cobwebs out of the top corner to bring a first half full of pace and alternatives to a close. After the break, Girona took control of the match and created danger with ease. A brilliant pass from Miguel broke down all the home side's lines and left Dovbyk alone, who again came up against Owono. Sávio, finishing off a move started on the other flank, had another chance for the third goal, and the Brazilian came close again after a combination with Portu, but crossed his shot too wide.Un golàs de Yangel Herrera per donar pas al millor Girona

Penalised in the last action

Girona had the game under control and the Basques found it hard to keep up with the pace imposed by Míchel Sánchez's men in the second half. The lack of effectiveness, however, gave them the air to make a final push in the added time, and they were rewarded. Tenaglia rose at the far post from a through ball from the middle of the pitch and stretched the ball into the heart of the box, where no-one could keep it out and Jon Guridi headed the ball home to level the scores. There are still three games left to continue fighting for second place and enjoying a team that has already made history. This Tuesday we receive the visit of Villarreal at Montilivi (22 h).
