Isidre Sala, the player with the most games in the history of Girona FC, dies

He defended the white-and-red shirt in 432 matches, during 13 seasons, and is the only player of the Club to have contested an Olympic Games

Isidre Sala, the player with the most games in the history of our Club, died today at the age of 81 after a long illness. With the transfer of Isidre Sala, Girona FC loses one of its great legends, being the only player from the Club to have competed in the Olympic Games. Born in Vilamalla on September 29, 1940 - he would have celebrated his 82nd birthday next week. birthday - wore the Girona FC shirt for 13 seasons, from 1963-64, when he arrived from Figueres, to 1975-76. At last, 432 games defending the white-and-red shirt, always in the Third Division.

Sala was an elegant and powerful central defender, with such great quality that in 1968 he was selected to be part of the Spanish Olympic team that was to compete in the Mexico Games. He is the only Girona footballer to have achieved this. The state team played five games in those Games, being eliminated by the hosts (2-0). Sala started in 4 of the 5 games, coming off the bench in another, to accumulate 377 minutes with the national team shirt.

As a player he experienced some historic moments of the Club, such as the move to Montilivi, or the failed promotions, first against Plus Ultra (1966-67) in Vista Alegre, and now in the current stadium, against Villarreal CF (1970 -71), and Córdoba CF (1972-73).

On August 26, 1976, after retiring, Sala was the subject of a massive tribute, during which the Catalan Football Federation awarded him the Silver Medal for Sports Merit. Later he coached several teams such as Olot and Lloret.
