Girona signs the young Portuguese center-back, who signs until 2031 after arriving from Benfica.

Girona FC continues to invest in young talent with potential by signing Mauro Furtado. The Portuguese central defender, born in Lisbon on July 30, 2008, joins the red-and-white club and is tied to the Club for the next five seasons, until 2031.

Considered one of the standout prospects in Portuguese football, the 18-year-old Furtado arrives from Benfica, one of the leading academies in European football. Fully trained at the Lisbon-based club, he stood out from a young age for his physical attributes, competitive maturity, and leadership ability in the defensive line. His constant growth led him to sign his first professional contract with Benfica in the summer of 2024.

At the international level, Mauro Furtado has established himself as a key player in the youth categories of the Portuguese national team. With Portugal's U-17 team, he experienced a particularly successful period, participating in winning the European Championship in the category and later in the historic victory at the U-17 World Cup. During the U-17 World Cup, the Portuguese central defender was one of the defensive pillars of the Portuguese team. His defensive solidity was crucial for Portugal to lift the world title for the first time in its history. His performances earned him notable individual accolades, being named the best player of the match in both the semifinals and the final, and receiving the Bronze Ball of the tournament, recognizing him as the third-best player of the competition.

Mauro stands out for his defensive strength, good positioning, ability to anticipate opponents, and remarkable quality in ball distribution. Despite his youth, he has demonstrated personality and competitive maturity in high-level international settings.

With his arrival, Girona adds a player with enormous growth potential and great future prospects, further reinforcing the Club's commitment to developing young talents with the potential to continue evolving within the red-and-white structure.
