"Winning away will give us continuity to keep improving"

Quique Álvarez appeared at a press conference to analyze the match that Girona will play this Monday at Tenerife's stadium. The red-and-white coach highlighted the positive evolution of the squad, the importance of recovering players, and the challenge of securing another away victory against a well-prepared and tough opponent.

The coach positively assessed the squad's situation, with several players making progress in their recovery. “Stuani and Jastin are improving. The players who returned from international duty have arrived in good condition and have been able to train,” he explained.

In this regard, Álvarez emphasized that having more players available expands the options when preparing for matches. “We have all the players, and it gives us a broader squad. We are reaching a point where there is internal competition to play, and that gives me more possibilities to choose,” he noted.

The coach also highlighted the importance of David López within the group, both for his performance on the field and his contribution in the locker room. “For me, it was important that he stayed. He gives us order, calmness, and experience. We are managing the physical issues he had well, and he helps us a lot both on and off the field,” he stated.

Regarding Unai Hernández, Álvarez underlined his progress in recent weeks. “He has improved a lot, like many other players who arrived late. It has been challenging for him, but I see him training very well, and he gives us different options between the lines. He already showed that the other day against Mallorca,” he commented.

A well-prepared and tough opponent

Girona will return to the Heliodoro Rodríguez López, a stadium that brings back good memories for the red-and-white team due to their promotion achieved there. “It’s a very beautiful memory. There are stadiums where you have good memories as a team, and this is one of them. But we must not forget where we are. We have to be ambitious and approach the match in the best way,” he emphasized.

Álvarez warned of the difficulty of the challenge against a Tenerife team that, despite not having won some of their recent matches, he considers competitive and clear in their approach.

“Tenerife has had a good start. Álvaro’s work is very good. It’s a team that is very hard to beat, defends very well, and knows what they are doing and what they want to achieve. The fact that they haven’t won some of their recent matches doesn’t mean they don’t compete well,” he pointed out.

The coach insisted on the solidity of the Canarian team, especially when playing at home. “It’s a well-prepared team and difficult to beat. If we’re not at our best, it will be very tough,” he warned.

Consistency, key to continued growth

The coach acknowledged that playing at home is always an advantage, especially with the support of the fans, but he stressed that the team’s ambition also involves achieving good results away from Montilivi.

“It’s always better to play at home, especially with the great atmosphere we have. But if you want to be at the top, you have to be consistent and win away as well,” he stated.

In this sense, earning three points in Tenerife would allow Girona to continue their progress. “I don’t like to look too far ahead. Winning away would give us continuity that will allow us to keep improving,” Álvarez explained, emphasizing the need to maintain humility and take advantage of the gradual recovery of players. “With humility, the team must take steps to become more dangerous for opponents,” he concluded.
