Central Alexander Callens, 30, has joined Girona in January 2023. The player, who has experience in the Spanish league, has signed a contract for the remainder of the season and another two. International for Peru, Callens will not occupy a non-EU position since he has Spanish nationality. In Girona he has coincided with Taty Castellanos, with whom he shared a dressing room until last year at New York City FC, and with Yangel Herrera, with whom he did so in the 2017 and 2018 seasons, also at the same club.
Formed in the lower categories of Sport Boys in his country, at the age of 18 he made his debut in the First Division and a year later, in the summer of 2011, he made the leap to Europe to sign for Real Sociedad B. In Spain he has played four seasons with the Gipuzkoan team - he made his debut with the first team in a Cup tie - and two at Numancia. In January 2017, he signed with New York City FC, where he has spent five seasons. During this time, he has added more than 160 appearances and has been nominated for best defender of the year in MLS on two occasions (2017 and 2021). With the American team he achieved the title of MLS Champion in 2021, the best team in the Eastern Conference and a Champions Cup.
