Girona FC continue to invest in young and promising talent with the signing of Mauro Furtado. The Portuguese centre-back, born in Lisbon on 30 July 2008, joins the club and has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at Girona until 2031.
Regarded as one of the most promising talents in Portuguese football, 18-year-old Furtado arrives from Benfica, one of Europe’s leading football academies. Developed entirely at the Lisbon-based club, he stood out from a young age for his physical attributes, competitive maturity and leadership qualities at the heart of the defence. His consistent development led him to sign his first professional contract with Benfica in the summer of 2024.
At international level, Mauro Furtado has established himself as an important player in Portugal’s youth teams. With Portugal U17, he enjoyed a particularly successful spell, helping the team win the UEFA European Under-17 Championship and, subsequently, the historic FIFA U-17 World Cup. During the U-17 World Cup, the Portuguese centre-back was one of the key defensive figures for the national team. His defensive solidity played a decisive role in Portugal winning the world title for the first time in its history. His performances also earned him significant individual recognition: he was named Player of the Match in both the semi-final and the final, and was awarded the Bronze Ball, recognising him as the third-best player of the tournament.
Mauro stands out for his defensive strength, excellent positioning, ability to anticipate opponents and notable quality in playing out from the back. Despite his young age, he has demonstrated personality and competitive maturity on the international stage.
