A statement win at Montilivi
Girona faced the duel at Montilivi with the urgent need to break the losing streak and move out of the relegation zone. Alavés, on the other hand, started the match with the ambition to stay at the top and continue dreaming of Europe.
The first minutes were dominated by the home team, with an intense and brave Girona pressing high and quickly recovering the ball. The red-and-whites, driven by their fans, found their reward in the 16th minute: a precise cross from Bryan Gil ended with a shot into the back of the net by Viktor Tsygankov to make it 1-0.
With the score in their favor, Míchel's team sought the second goal with patience and possession. However, a scare came in the 54th minute when Antonio Blanco equalized with a header that, after a VAR review, was disallowed for offside.
Far from slowing down, Girona continued to create danger. Stuani had the second goal at his feet, but his shot was also ruled out for an offside position.
In the final minutes, Alavés pressed desperately, but a very solid defense and an inspired Gazzaniga in goal secured the victory.
The final whistle unleashed euphoria at Montilivi: Girona wins again after a series of negative results and, with these three points, moves out of the relegation positions.
