Girona B loses its unbeaten streak in Olot (2-1)
Girona B saw their good run come to an end this Sunday at the Municipal d’Olot, where they lost 2-1 after taking the lead early in the second half. Quique Álvarez's team, which had gone six consecutive matches without a defeat, was unable to maintain their advantage and ended up succumbing to a very effective Olot in set-piece situations. With this defeat, the red-and-white reserve team drops to fifth place and will host FC Barcelona Atlètic next Sunday (12:00 h) at Montilivi.
The match began with Girona B dominating possession and imposing their style, keeping Olot pinned in their half for much of the first quarter-hour. Despite the control, chances were scarce: only a forced header by Pol Arnau at the far post (15’) caused any concern for the Olot goal. The home team, well-organized, sought their opportunities through isolated actions like a wayward shot from Marc Mas or a dangerous cross from Víctor Maffeo.
After a balanced first half, the scoreline was opened in the 51st minute with an instinctive play by Arango, who capitalized on a lofted ball to score acrobatically with his head and shoulder, beating Ballesté with an unstoppable parabola (0-1). The goal seemed to put the match on track for the Girona side, but the joy was short-lived. Just four minutes later, a lateral free kick taken by Albert López found Martí Soler unmarked, who equalized with a flawless header (1-1).
From that point on, the match took a different turn. Olot, spurred on by their crowd, grew in intensity and pushed Girona B back, forcing them to defend against a barrage of local crosses. Despite a dangerous shot from Shin (61’), the Olot side completed their comeback, again from a set piece: Martí Soler, with another header following a corner, made it 2-1 (78’).
In the final minutes, Girona B pressed hard for an equalizer. Pol Arnau came close with a spectacular bicycle kick that grazed the post (87’), but the Garrotxa defense held firm until the final whistle.
Despite the defeat, the Girona reserve team maintains the positive impression of being a competitive side with clear ideas, though they will need to improve their defensive set-piece play if they want to stay in the upper part of the table. The next challenge will be a tough one: Barça Atlètic will visit Montilivi next Sunday in a direct clash for the top positions.
