Girona extends Holmes Junior's contract until 2029

The Girona FC has agreed to extend Holmes Junior's contract for two more seasons, until 2029. The young defender, born in 2009, has shown remarkable progress since his arrival in Girona in the summer of 2025 and has become one of the most promising players in the red-and-white academy.

Holmes Junior, of Spanish and Colombian nationality, primarily plays as a central defender, although he can also perform as a midfielder. His defensive skills, composure on the ball, and versatility have been some of the traits that have allowed him to advance quickly within the Club's development structure.

A career marked by progression

Initially trained in the youth categories of Reus, Holmes Junior also played for Espanyol and Real Madrid before joining the youth academy of Nàstic de Tarragona. During the 2024/25 season, he played 26 matches with Cadet A grana and made the leap to Juvenil B, where he also participated. His progression caught the attention of several clubs, and he eventually moved to Girona in the summer of 2025.

In his first season as a Girona player, Holmes Junior featured in three different teams. He played 16 matches with Juvenil B, then moved up to Juvenil A, where he made 8 appearances. He was also included in three call-ups for Girona B.

His growth has also been reflected in the Spanish national team. Junior is an under-17 international and was part of the squad that competed in the U-17 European Championship in Estonia in 2026.

A standout in preseason

The most significant leap came this summer. Junior was one of the reserve and academy players called up by Quique Álvarez to start the preseason with the first team. The Club included him in the first training session of the 2026/27 season, along with other young academy players.

In the friendly matches, he seized the opportunity to make his mark and delivered an outstanding performance, particularly showcasing his reliability in duels and his ability to initiate play from the back. He also demonstrated his versatility by occasionally playing as a pivot.

The culmination of his progress was his official debut with the first team in the opening match of the championship against Leganés at Montilivi. Holmes Junior was in the starting eleven and showcased his abilities with an excellent performance.

At just 17 years old, his presence in the first team's dynamics confirms Girona's commitment to one of the most promising talents in their academy, while the contract extension allows the Club to continue working on the young footballer's long-term development.
