Girona overturn Espanyol to win the Catalan derby

A great goal from Arnau and another from Stuani gave the three points to the red and white team

Girona overcame Espanyol in a hard-fought match at Montilivi that was settled in the final minutes. Arnau opened the scoring with a wonderful goal, Braithwaite equalised for the visitors, and Stuani gave the Red and Whites the win from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.

The first half was marked by equality. It was not until the half-hour mark that Taty tried twice, but without much luck. In the 37th minute, Tsygankov hit the side netting after a great transition from Toni Villa. The first Blue and Whites' first approach came just before the break, with a deflected shot from Rubén.

The second half got off to the best possible start. Arnau opened the scoring with a huge left-footed shot that flew into the top corner of the net. Girona tried to continue to dominate the game, but in a second move, Braithwaite equalised in the 73rd minute. The Red and Whites did not give up and started to look for the second goal with insistence. Sergi Gómez was sent off in the 83rd minute for a tackle on Castellanos. And in the 88th minute, Stuani converted a penalty to make Montilivi explode and win the Catalan derby.

Three golden points for Girona, who now have 34 points and are eight points clear of the relegation zone, with the rest of the game still to play.
