Montilivi leads the way

Girona adds eleventh home win and continues to dream with the fans

Montilivi continues to guide the team in the right direction and today Míchel Sánchez's men got three points in front of their fans in a key victory to face the final stretch of the season with the dream intact. The Girona side took an early lead with a goal from Portu and were the better side in terms of play and chances, but they were unable to close out the scoring until the final stretch despite having some good opportunities. In a game that was controlled but tense because of the slender lead, Savinho finally sent the crowd wild with a late winner.

Dovbyk's header was just wide of the far post, and the Ukrainian striker saw his first disallowed shortly after. The goal was not long in coming and, after a long sequence of passes, Portu attacked the space and crossed to put the team ahead and pave the way for the three points. The Red and Whites controlled the match on the ball, but struggled to create clear chances in the first half against a very tidy Osasuna defence that only created danger in isolated direct play.

They took a step forward in the second half in front of goal, and it only started with Portu and Tsygankov leaving a very good ball for Dovbyk to head high. The Ukrainian opened the scoring and a few minutes later he was inches away from finishing off a cross from Miguel on the left. Blind also had a chance with a shot that rebounded off a defender, and one of the clearest chances came from the boots of Sávio. He himself started the action in his own half, generated the advantage, helped himself to a team-mate and ended up falling inside the area when he was facing goal, but the referee did not award a penalty. At the following corner, Montilivi chanted for a goal, but the visitors avoided it without hesitation.

Stuani also went close in a one-on-one that went just wide, and Sávio had a goal disallowed for a foul on Stuani in the action. The Brazilian finished the game with four minutes to go in a good combination of the team that ended up giving him a backheel, and he finished with a cross shot from inside the area that was just inside the long post. With the game already decided, Couto came very close to scoring the third in stoppage time, but Sergio Herrera saved with a good hand.

Girona remain second in the standings and move up to 62 points with ten games remaining in the season. Next week the team will visit Getafe and will close the month of March by hosting Betis at Montilivi.
