Girona deserved to score, but were penalised by Getafe's effectiveness and lack of goalscoring in a rocky game
Girona failed to rediscover their good feelings away from home and suffered another defeat at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez. Míchel Sánchez's men were penalised by Getafe's effectiveness and a lack of attacking accuracy. Despite struggling to find continuity in the game, the team had clear chances to equalise but were unable to take advantage.
The 'rojiblancos' were the protagonists with the ball and tried to impose their style against a much more defensive and practical home side. With patience, the Girona side tried to disrupt a rocky Getafe, and they could have succeeded after ten minutes when Portu broke into space and headed alone in front of goal, but the action was cut off by Alderete, who grabbed him by the shirt. The bad luck for Míchel's men was that, in the first dangerous arrival, the home side scored and took advantage of this to reinforce their game plan. Ilaix Moriba slipped a pass through to Yellu on the half-hour mark, and he finished inside the area with a cross-shot.
Girona went from strength to strength, and in the final stretch of the first half they had two good chances from Dovbyk. The first, taking advantage of a pass between Portu's lines that ended with a shot that was too wide, and the second, arriving too forced at the far post to finish off a cross from Sávio.
The script was the same at the restart, with Girona trying to take the initiative and creating good chances against a solid Getafe side in a game with many interruptions. The Ukrainian striker threatened again with a soft header just after coming out of the dressing room, and Pablo Torre also came even closer with his head, but his shot went over the crossbar. Dovbyk, who was the one who tried the most, had another chance, receiving the ball in space and cutting out two defenders to shoot too close, and the '9' had another sniff of goal in the final stretch when he finished off a cross from Sávio that David Sória saved with a great hand.
The team took too much punishment from Madrid in a hard-fought game and with merits to get something more. Now the league stops for a week and we will close the month of March by hosting Betis at Montilivi with the aim of continuing to make the stadium a fortress.
