The Girona FC officially presented Quique Álvarez as the new head coach of the first team this afternoon in an event held at the Montilivi Municipal Stadium. The press conference was attended by president Delfí Geli and sporting director Quique Cárcel, as well as the coach. Also present were Òscar Álvarez, assistant coach, and Jordi Balcells, fitness coach, who will be part of the new coach's staff.
Delfí Geli highlighted the recent trajectory of the new coach and the club's confidence in his project: "It is not easy to maintain consistency in a reserve team, and he has been able to get great performance from the squad." The president expressed his conviction in the new phase: "We are confident that Quique will lead us to success. The Segunda is a demanding category, and there will be difficult moments, but we are sure it will go well."
For his part, Quique Cárcel explained the selection process and the reasons that led the club to bet on Álvarez: "Two years ago, I called Quique to help Girona B grow, and the evolution has been very clear. I have seen how his teams have grown and how the players have developed. This led us to consider him for the future." The sporting director added that, after meeting with several candidates, "together with City, we chose Quique because he has great leadership skills and is prepared to face demanding objectives."
In terms of sports, Cárcel highlighted the arrival of Izan and Pyshchur "who we had already agreed upon some time ago" and added that, in principle, no player under contract will leave unless an interesting offer for the club comes in."
In his first appearance as the first team's head coach, Quique Álvarez expressed being "very excited and grateful" for the opportunity: "A week after the league ended, I already had a meeting with the club, but a process had to be followed. Knowing that I was one of the preferred options gives me a lot of strength to face this challenge."
The new coach acknowledged the complexity of the moment and emphasized the energy with which he is approaching this new phase: "The situation is not easy, but we have an advantage: we are coming in fresh, and we need to know how to transmit this energy." He also pointed out that the preseason and the transfer market will shape the first months: "It will be a long period until the market closes, but I am sure we will have a great team in a long and challenging category."
Regarding the playing style and objectives, Álvarez was clear: "I like teams to be brave and have a recognizable style. The first thing we need to recover is the soul." The coach did not hide the club's ambition: "A team that gets relegated wants to regain the category. We cannot hide. With calmness, humility, and hard work, we can achieve it."
Finally, Álvarez wanted to acknowledge the work done so far and look to the future: "Míchel has done incredible things and leaves a significant legacy. I am not here to compare myself to anyone but to prove why they have trusted me." He also pointed out that there will be opportunities for loaned players and that the current group — with 25 players under contract — will be the foundation on which to build the new project.
