He will be accompanied by his brother Òscar as his second, and Jordi Balcells as the physical trainer.
Quique Alvarez will be the new coach of Girona FC for this season. With this decision, the club is betting on internal promotion and ensuring continuity in the sports project, entrusting the management of the first team to a homegrown coach with a deep understanding of its structure. Coming from Girona FC B, Quique Álvarez, who has signed for one season, makes the leap from the reserve team to the first team after two seasons of great performance.
As the head of the second team, the coach has been able to lead a competitive and growing project, achieving promotion from Tercera RFEF to Segunda RFEF two seasons ago and consolidating the category last season. These results highlight his ability to develop talent and compete at a high level, as well as his knowledge of Girona FC's youth system, one of the Club's pillars.
Enrique Álvarez Sanjuán (Vigo, July 20, 1975) is a coach with a long career in professional football. As a player, trained in the youth ranks of FC Barcelona, he had a career spanning more than 15 years as a central defender, with experience at clubs such as CD Logroñés, UE Lleida, and especially Villarreal CF, where he played for seven seasons in the First Division.
After retiring as a player, he began his coaching career in 2009, gaining experience both in youth football (FC Barcelona) and at the elite level, being part of coaching staffs at clubs such as Villarreal CF, Deportivo Alavés, and Levante UD. Before making the leap to the first team, he served as the coach of Girona FC B, strengthening his connection with the Club and its sports model.
Joining him in this new phase will be his brother, Óscar Álvarez, as assistant coach, as well as Jordi Balcells as fitness coach. A former Girona FC player between 2008 and 2010, Óscar was also part of the coaching staff of the second team, with whom he has shared recent successes. Balcells was previously part of the first team's coaching staff during Pablo Machín's tenure at Girona FC and, until now, served as the fitness coach for the reserve team.
Quique Álvarez now faces the challenge of leading the first team with the goal of returning Girona FC to the First Division, bringing his experience, knowledge of the club, and commitment to young talent.
With this move, Girona FC reaffirms its confidence in internal talent and a model based on continuity, identity, and growth from its youth system.
